Lifting Slings FAQs

1. What are lifting slings, and how are they used?

A lifting sling is designed for use by trained carers and clinicians with a compatible 2-point, 4-point, or 6-point cradle. Models such as the Oxford Comfort Access Padded and Oxford Deluxe Standing connect via the patented Securi3 clip system to prevent accidental detachment. These lifting slings are suited to specific transfer types, such as toileting, standing assistance, or full-body support, and should only be prescribed following a professional client assessment.

2. What are the differences between toileting, standing, and general-purpose hoist slings?
  • Comfort Access Padded Sling: For toileting transfers, with clothing access panels, head support, and non-slip back section.
  • Deluxe Standing Sling: For clients with partial weight-bearing ability, offering secure waist support for assisted standing and transfers.
  • MultiFit SL Reflex Sling: A universal option for general transfers, with reflex shoulder straps for clients prone to spasm or lacking seat control.
  • Full Back Sling: For clients requiring maximum security and posture control during lifts.

A qualified assessor should match the sling lift type to the client’s mobility, posture, and transfer needs

3. How do I choose the correct sling lifter size?

Oxford sling lifters are available in XS to XL, with colour-coded binding for quick identification. A qualified OT, physiotherapist, or trained dealer should select the size using the Oxford Sling Measuring Guide, considering the client’s body measurements, posture, and clinical needs. This process must be supported by a formal risk assessment before ordering. For added guidance, the Enable Lifecare app includes a Sling Selector Tool that walks you through sling selection, measurements, and size suggestions.

4. What is the safe working load (SWL) of slings for lifting?

Safe working load varies by model and size. MostOxford lifting slings have an SWL of 200–227 kg, while the MultiFit SL Reflex XLsupports up to 284 kg for bariatric use. Professionals should always check the specific model’s technical specifications to ensure suitability for the client’s weight and transfer requirements.

5. How should professionals maintain and inspect a lifting sling?

Before each use, the assessor or facility staff should inspect the sling lifter for fraying, stitching wear, or fabric damage. Follow manufacturer cleaning guidelines, usually mild detergent and air drying, and avoid bleach or high heat. A sling lift showing signs of wear or failing inspection must be withdrawn from service immediately for safety.
